Key Stage 3 PE

Curriculum Physical Education
All pupils are taught by specialist Physical Education staff. Careful planning of time allocation ensures a broad and balanced Physical Education programme.
Resources are excellent, and it is important that our pupils enjoy plenty of vigorous physical activity and experience a wide variety of movement in order to learn to control their bodies. All pupils are treated as equals - everyone gets a chance.

Cross Curricular Experiences
These areas are all catered for: Physical Development; Cognitive Development; Language Development; Socialisation; Science & Technology; Aesthetic & Creative Development; Health Education; Cultural Heritage; Education for Mutual Understanding; Careers Education; Cross Curricular Careers; Areas of Study; Economic Awareness; I.C.T.; Special Needs.

After School Activities
 A wide and varied after school activity programme is offered to all of our pupils
 Saturday mornings, Hockey for the girls - play matches, home & away.
 Saturday mornings, Rugby for the boys - play matches, home & away.

Cricket (Boys).
Various competitions and leagues are entered, and links are established between local clubs, and some pupils are given the opportunity to attend coaching courses.
Competitions are both inter- and intra-school, Leagues and Cups.
Those pupils with outstanding ability are sent for Trials at local and national level.
Some pupils are given the opportunity to attend international matches, North and South of Ireland.

Each year our pupils are entered for the District Athletics Championships. We have always been very successful at District Level, Ulster Level and Irish Level.

Each child is given the opportunity to reach their true and maximum potential, and this can take the form of simply staying after school to enjoy a practice, OR playing on a 'B' team, an 'A' team, being sent for Trials, representing the school at District Level, Ulster Level or Irish Level.

A House Points system operates within the school, for sporting achievements, and various trophies can be won each year.

School Colours are awarded for sporting achievements.
All pupils are given the opportunity to stay after school for: Rugby (Boys), Gymnastics, Badminton & Table Tennis, Cross-country, Athletics, Golf, Skiing (lessons for Ski Trip), Swimming, Cricket, and Tennis.

GCSE PE
 
Entry Requirement

Students must have a genuine interest in physical education and sport, playing at least one competitive sport in school on a regular basis. With a minimum of two sports in total. Pupils should also have a level 9 or 10 in Key Stage 3 PE.

The subject content is divided into three compulsory components:

Component 1 (40%): Developing Knowledge, Understanding and Skills for Balanced, Healthy Lifestyles and Participation in Physical Activities;

Component 2 (20%): Developing and Maintaining a Balanced, Healthy Lifestyle; and

Component 3 (40%): Individual Performance in Physical Activities, which comprises:
(a) Analysing, evaluating, planning, implementing and monitoring actions to improve skilled performance in selected physical activities; and

(b) Improving the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of individual performances in physical activities; and the study of Component 1 provides the theoretical basis for the tasks in Components 2 and 3.

  AS/A2 Level PE

Entry Requirement
 
GCSE Grade A is recommended in Physical Education. Alternatively, GCSE Grade B in Biology (single award) or a double award grade BB, together with a genuine interest in sport (must be presently playing competitive sport on a regular basis) are also accepted.

AS examinations
Unit 1: Opportunities for, and the effects, of leading a healthy and active lifestyle
Written paper, 2 hours
84 marks – 60% of AS, 30% of A level
Section A – six structured questions on applied physiology, skill acquisition and opportunities for participation
Section B – application of theory to a practical situation (assesses Unit 2 content)
Available – January and June
Unit 2: Analysis and evaluation of physical activity as performer and/or in an adopted role/s
Internal assessment, externally moderated
100 marks – 40% of AS, 20% of A level
Perform, analyse and evaluate core skills/techniques in isolation and a structured practice as either:
• player/performer and in an adopted role
• in two adopted roles.

A2 examinations
Unit 3: Optimising performance and evaluating contemporary issues within sport
Written paper, 2 hours
84 marks – 30% of A level
Three sections: how physiological factors, applied psychology and contemporary influences affect performance
Available – June
Unit 4: Optimising practical performance in a competitive situation
Internal assessment, externally moderated
120 marks – 20% of A level
Perform, analyse, evaluate and correct own performance in a competitive situation as either:
• player/performer
• in an adopted role
