Pupils in the Preparatory Department follow the Northern Ireland Curriculum. They are taught at a level which meets their individual needs. They are supported in small classes and parents are encouraged to work with the teachers to ensure that each child achieves their own individual potential.

Primary 1 take part in Baseline Assessment to identify the strengths and needs of each child. Primary 1 and 2 sit no formal exams. Their work is closely monitored and assessed within the classroom. Two written reports are sent home; the first in February, and one in June.
Primary 3 continue to have their work closely monitored and parents receive reports in February and June. Primary 3 also complete National Federation of Educational Research English and Maths Tests in June so that their progress can be monitored and work planned according to their needs.
Primary 4 children have class tests in the core subject in February and June and reports on progress are sent home. They also complete NFER English and Maths tests in June.
Primary 5 and 6 have class tests in the core subjects in February and June and reports on progress are sent home in February and June. NFER English and Maths Tests are also completed in June.
Primary 7 children sit the Transfer Tests in November. They have written reports sent home in February and June. They also complete NFER Tests in English and Maths in June.
All assessments carried out in the Preparatory Department are done in a positive and constructive way. The results obtained are used to plan work for individual needs.
Parents may come into school at any time during the year to discuss results.
