Quality experiences make for what I would call “a constructive business” which in turn nurtures a wholesome self-confidence, self-esteem and ultimately “character”.
(Excerpt from the Headmaster’s Address at the Annual Prize-Giving, 2008)
Most activities are winding down in the last week of the summer term but one is gearing itself up for battle. The annual Chess Tournament takes place and its players can be clearly identified in the corridors by the intent expressions on their faces. This year’s competition was better than ever as the number of entrants saw a large increase. Year 8 was very well represented and it was good to see the game being enjoyed by all age groups in school. More girls took part than usual and we hope to see this trend continuing as it’s the only battlefield where the sexes can compete equally.
There was many a wrinkled brow during the period of the Tournament. The match between Gareth Shields and William Armstrong was particularly well played but eventually William gained the upper hand and Gareth was check-mated. Don’t worry, Gareth - you’ll get his king next time. The armies under the control of Megan Emerson and Lindsay Smith also fought a great fight. It was one of the most dignified ‘cat fights’ I have ever seen.
Hopefully, the success of this Tournament will continue. We look forward to seeing many more new faces next year and beginners are always welcome.
Just remember: keep playing!
